Welcome to the site

The physics of gymnastics is all about the gymnast's mass in motion.  A gymnast uses so many aspects of physics in every skill.  The center of gravity is found when performing a handstand on almost every apparatus, horizontal and vertical forces are applied to perform any type of somersault, and angular momentum is used by a gymnast to twist their body in the air.  These are just few of the many times physics applies to gymnastics.

Nastia Liukin uses

Newton's First Law of Motion to

keep her flipping in a straight line over

the beam.  Click on Newton's Laws of

Motion tab to find out more about how

these vital principles of physics apply

to the sport of gymnastics!
